Solar balconies beckon

Getting solar power to high rise apartment has been an issue, but one solution is the deployment of mini-arrays to each balcony.

Off-the-grid balconies use solar cells installed on balcony surfaces to harness sunlight and convert it into electricity. Panels can be attached to a balcony railing or floor and connected to a control device inside the apartment which, in turn, connects to the apartment's electricity supply.

“Off-the-grid balconies have expanded the scope of renewable energy,” says Aurelijus Jaškulis, COO of Tukas EV, a startup. “This is a fairly straightforward, eco-friendly solution for city residents keen to reduce their reliance on traditional power grids and contribute to a sustainable future.”

The solution has become particularly popular in Germany, where government subsidies help offset some of the cost of installation. But other countries, such as United Kingdom, have been slower to adopt the concept.

The power generated by balcony solar panels can vary, depending on factors such as balcony size, panel quality, and amount of sunlight. A balcony solar system might produce sufficient electricity to power small devices continuously, while some larger systems may even produce a significant portion of an apartment's general electricity needs.
