The Cathay Pacific is set to reduce its single-use plastic (SUP) footprint by half by the end of 2022, removing nearly 200 million pieces of SUP from operations annually and is committed to buying 1.1 million tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel over the next decade.
The commitments come as the company has published it annual sustainability report, that also reports that in 2019 a total of 34,000 tonnes of carbon emission produced by operations were offset by its voluntary carbon offset programme, Fly Greener.
The commitments come as airlines, facing dramatic economic pressure from the results of the pandemic are also targeted as major polluters, making the future of air travel a focus for new technologies such as the UK Governments funding of electric air travel and widespread adoption of biofuels.
An interesting part of Cathy Pacific’s programme is the adoption of plant-based ingredients, becoming the world’s first airline to incorporate OmniPork – a plant-based protein – in its inflight menu.
