The Guardian and Observer’s annual charity appeal has raised £1.7m for three good causes supporting victims of war and conflict.
The money will go towards the work of international aid charities Médecins Sans Frontières and War Child to provide frontline emergency medical care and specialist psychological support to victims of war and violence.
Another supported is Parallel Histories, which tackles division in communities by working in schools to on lessons around sensitive and contested histories of conflict.
This is the highest total the charity appeal has reached since 2016 and marks the 10th successive year the appeal among readers has raised more than £1m.
During 2024 more than 15,000 readers of the paper donated and over the past decade readers have raised nearly £15, for good causes, including those tackling child poverty and climate change.
Fundraising included an annual telethon giving readers the chance to donate and speak with journalists at the papers.
Also 20p from every sale through the Guardian Bookshop was donated to the appeal.
“It is clear that while there is little relief from the violence and misery, whether in Gaza, Ukraine or Sudan or beyond, the appeal has offered extremely positive glimmers of hope,” said the Guardian’s editor in chief Katharine Viner.
